The Grocery Club takes place at St. Philip’s on the Second Wednesday of each month. A few days before the date, one of our members receives the menu of what we can buy from the Food Bank of Delaware. That individual places an order so there will be enough food to fill all of our grocery boxes. (In 2006, we filled 30 boxes each month; in 2007, we will be filling 45 boxes each month). Meanwhile, another member has been searching for strong useable boxes—about 2’ x 2’ (or the type of box that holds 10 reams of paper). On the second Wednesday of the month, two people, one who owns a van or truck, drive to the food bank and purchase (at a great discount) the ordered food. The choices might include chicken, cereal, stuffing, canned items, cheese, mouthwash, baby food, hot dogs, or other items. Then, they drive to St. Philip’s, where another group of volunteers are waiting to unload all of the food. At that point, we start taking one of each item and placing it in each of the waiting boxes, until all of the boxes are stuffed with an assortment of the items. Between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m., persons who have been evaluated (and reevaluated every six months) as low-income individuals by a member of the Social Ministry Committee arrive and are given boxes of food. This takes place, month after month. All types of help are needed, such as: 1) taping the boxes together 2) driving to pick up the food 3) unloading and carrying the food 4) boxing up the food 5) sitting behind the table and checking off the names Only a few hours of your time are needed each month.
